Teaching

My class contextualizes contemporary dance technique as an ongoing process of body awareness within larger ecological systems. How we exist in our bodies replicates how we exist in the world. Utilizing improvisation, set phrasework, somatic exercises and conversation, we will explore physical prowess, performativity, and authenticity in movement

Student Testimonials:

Elayna gave us a diverse range of phrases/exercises/improvisation scores throughout the semester, and I enjoyed having a class with a somewhat unpredictable structure. We always started somewhere familiar and then let the class develop in the way that felt right in the moment, so I always felt like Elayna met the class where we were physically and mentally and found a way to cater her instruction accordingly. She created a very safe and calming atmosphere with ample positive and constructive feedback, which helped me approach class with an open mind made me feel seen on an individual level each day. I appreciated that Elayna's class was immersed in such a feeling of community while also making me feel like an important contributor to that community environment.”

“She was very upfront with what she thought I needed to improve on in my learning and I definitely needed to hear what she thought or else I wouldn't be able to improve. I loved taking her class and getting out of my comfort zone.”

“Elayna included a lot of improvisation based on body awareness and sensation which helped me to understand my body better. As she introduced this in the warm up, I felt like I was more tuned into my body and able to stay focused and centered throughout the class.”
